„INTERESTING“ PEOPLE

‘THE WORLD IS DIVERSE, SO IS PARKOUR’

.

On this page, I’d like to introduce you to some interesting people from the community. You’ll find women, men and LGBTQIA+ individuals here.

Unfortunately, parkour is still a male-dominated sport. There are already quite a few women involved, but there can never be enough. They move differently, which is a good thing and brings diversity and creativity to the sport. Respect to all the women who are already part of it and share their moves with us.

LGBTQIA+ people are often overlooked and marginalised in sport. It’s important to me to showcase the diversity of people in parkour and make it visible. Respect to all LGBTQIA+ people in the community.

Hello, how are you today? What is your name and what are your pronouns?

I’m doing quite well thank you! My name is Egg and my pronouns are they / she

When did you started Parkour and what was the reason?

I started when I was 9 years old after finding some videos on YouTube. Traditional sports were never my thing and it quickly became the main way in which I could connect with my own body.

Did you started by yourself or with other People?

I started parkour with one friend of mine from school, but didn’t find or connect with a larger parkour community or scene until 2-3 years into my training.

How often do you train and what is your approach for a training?

I move every day. The key to doing so while still being kind to my body is my drive to vary my approach to movement as often as I can.

You are doing a lot of flips but you can although get pretty flowy. Can you tell me what your favourite move/challange is right now?

This might sound a little vague, but my favorite idea to play with at the moment is setting a trick, and halfway through the trick using contact with an obstacle, often a wall, to redirect my momentum in a different direction.

You do skateboarding, skiing and inliner as well. Does those Sports influence your style of moving when you do Parkour?

Skiing and rollerblading have greatly influenced how I think about style and expression. My involvement with these adjacent sports / arts has led me to focus much more not just on what moves I do, but how they feel and what they communicate.

What was your best experience during a Training/Jam?

One of my favorite memories was Jump Fest in 2018. Made so many friends there that I remain close with to this day.

Was war dein schönstes Erlebnis beim Training/Jam?

How do you feel as part of the Parkour-Community?

I feel in a bit of an awkward spot at times. There are not many gender queer athletes in parkour, and the overtly masculine culture can be a bit alienating at times. However there are many aspects of the community that I find really positive wish could be shared with more people.

What are your goals for Parkour?

It is my desire to have as much fun as possible pushing myself with movement both physically and artistically. I hope that through pursuing my artistic vision and being as vocal about my experiences as a trans person in parkour as possible, I can hopefully help direct parkour in a move inclusive direction.

If you had one wish, what would it be?

That the parkour community at large would stop valuing difficulty and physically prowess so much higher than all the other aspects of movement. I think there is a infrequently discusses bias toward movement styles that are pushing physical boundaries over artistic expression. Both are amazing and worthy of praise and attention.

Thank your for the interview. It was very interesting to talk to you and to see a different point of view. I wish you all the best and hope to see and train with you one day.

SINGLE STEP

Bulgaria’s LGBTQ group Single Step, which provides support to LGBTQ youth and their families, today released a stunning video encouraging people all around the world to be themselves.

Said director Sandro Suppnig: “I wanted to create a coming out story that is universal, that everyone can relate to on some level. A piece to inspire young people to have the courage to be their true self, using parkour as a metaphor for finding inner strength by belonging to a community. If this film helps only one person, I have achieved what I wanted.”

Shot on location in and around Sofia, Bulgaria, the clip stars German actor Robert Maaser (Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation, Sense8), NYC-based artist Edward Granger, and a group of young Bulgarian parkour athletes. Jalaludin Trautmann was the cinematographer.

Added Single Step founder Ivan Dimov: “One year ago I had a vision of a young man in distress standing on the edge of a cliff. And he takes one crucial step… I am deeply grateful to the amazing team that created Be Yourself, for their dedication and heart.”

SEITENWECHSEL – BERLIN

https://www.seitenwechsel-berlin.de/sportangebote/parkour

Parkour

Parkour is a form of locomotion that aims to get from point A to point B as efficiently as possible using only the abilities of one’s own body. Parkour runners determine their own path through urban or natural space – in a different way to that prescribed by architecture and culture. The aim is to overcome obstacles in the way as efficiently as possible by combining different movements. The focus is on the flow and control of movement.

Nora wants to give everyone the opportunity to try out parkour in a healthy and safe way. Too old, too weak, too scared for parkour? No, you’re not! There is no competition in parkour, everyone works on their own challenges.

The aim of parkour training is to awaken the joy of movement and to teach parkour and its philosophy in a holistic and fun way. The focus is primarily on sustainable, healthy training that is tailored to the individual requirements and needs of the participants. The training begins with a thorough warm-up and mobilisation to optimally prepare the body for the demands of parkour. You then work step by step on various parkour techniques and moves and apply these in creative interaction with the environment or sometimes in a playful way.

A varied strength training programme and a thorough and relaxing stretching session round off the training. The training is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, as well as for people with disabilities. It is possible to join at any time.

Thu 18:30 – 20:30 All levels

Meeting point changes. We meet in all weathers! As you will be moving from place to place during the training, please make sure you have suitable luggage (running rucksack instead of bag).
